Dumbleton's iconic red phone box

We're helping to save Dumbleton's iconic red phone box… and we want you to be part of it!

BT has identified the red phone box on Main Street as one of many across the UK to be decommissioned and removed.

The Village Hall committee believes this is an important part of the village's heritage and would like to save the phone box and keep it as part of Dumbleton.

As Dumbleton Village Hall is a registered charity, we're in the unique position to be able to purchase the phone box under BT's Adopt a Kiosk Scheme so we can ensure that we keep this much-loved icon central to our village.

As much as we would love to keep the phone box in its current position, and with its distinctive angle, the cost of public liability insurance is prohibitive so we are proposing a new site for the phone box.

Dumbleton Village Hall has applied to Tewkesbury Borough Council for planning permission to site the phone box on the ground in front of the bus shelter.

A project for the whole community

As a registered charity, the Village Hall is able to adopt the phone box from BT but we want everyone in Dumbleton to be involved in this project. This is part of the history of our great village and it is something for our whole community to be part of. There are a number of ways you can get involved in saving this village icon:

By donating

Uninstalling, taking apart, reconditioning, rebuilding and installing on a new site a 750kg piece of history requires a significant amount of money. We're raising funds to help with all of the associated costs. To recognise your fantastic contribution to village history, everyone who donates will have their name included in the newly restored phone box.

You can donate directly to the Save our Phone Box fund on our Go Fund Me page

If you're a UK tax payer, you can make your brilliant donation go even further by ticking the Gift Aid box - this adds a further 25p for every £1 you donate!

By helping

If you run a business or know someone who does that can assist us with any of the following:

  • moving big, heavy objects
  • restoring historic items
  • repairing the public highways (and is registered to work on the highways)
  • working with commercial electrics

then we'd love to hear from you! Contact us on phonebox@dumbletonvillagehall.org.uk or speak to any of the committee

By giving us your ideas

We have some ideas of how the resited phone box can be used for the benefit of the community but we want to hear your ideas - this is a project for the whole village so it's something for everyone to be involved in.

Some of the things phone boxes are being used for around the country include:

  • Community libraries
  • Information points
  • ATMs
  • Electric car charging stations
  • Internet delivery drop off points
  • Pubs and tea shops (yes, really!)

Email us your ideas at: phonebox@dumbletonvillagehall.org.uk
